1937: Bass player Joe Osborn was born in Mound, LA. A session player in Los Angeles and Nashville, he appeared on hits by the likes of Ricky Skaggs, Mickey Gilley, Glen Campbell and The Oak Ridge Boys, plus numerous pop records.
1947: Gene Autry recorded “Here Comes Santa Claus (Down Santa Claus Lane)” at the CBS Studios in Los Angeles.
1959: Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper recorded “There’s A Big Wheel.”
1965: Eileen Edwards was born in Windsor, Ontario. As Shania Twain, she became the first woman to sell more than 10 million copies each of consecutive albums–“The Woman In Me” and “Come On Over“–and won the CMA’s Entertainer of the Year in 1999.
1967: Capitol released Glen Campbell’s “Gentle On My Mind” album.
1967: Capitol released Merle Haggard’s “Branded Man” album.
1968: Tammy Wynette wrote and recorded “Stand By Your Man” at the Columbia Recording Studio in Nashville.
1970: Sherrie Austin was born in Sydney, Australia. She appeared during the 1980s on the sitcom “The Facts Of Life,” credited as Sherrie Krenn. Austin earned a country hit in 2003 with “Streets Of Heaven.”
1973: Tanya Tucker recorded “Would You Lay With Me (In A Field Of Stone)” in Nashville. While songwriter David Allan Coe attended the session, his car was stolen from the Columbia Studio parking lot.
1982: LeAnn Rimes was born in Jackson, MS. After releasing her first hit, “Blue,” at age 13, she won a Grammy for Best New Artist, becoming one of country’s most powerful vocalists. Other hits include “How Do I Live,” “Big Deal” and “I Need You.”
1982: George Strait notched his first #1 single with “Fool Hearted Memory.”
1982: Marty Robbins made his final appearance on the Grand Ole Opry. He performed 15 songs before the evening was over, finishing with “El Paso.”
1993: Tracy Lawrence collected a #1 country single in Billboard magazine with “Can’t Break It To My Heart.”
2003: Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” won the MTV Music Video Award for best cinematography during a ceremony in New York. Cash was unable to attend as he was hospitalized in Nashville.
2008: The documentary “A Kentucky Treasure: The J.D. Crowe Story” premiered in Wilmore, KY. On-screen participants include Ricky Skaggs, Marty Stuart, Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Earl Scruggs, Bela Fleck and Tony Trischka.
2019: Cody Jinks made his Grand Ole Opry debut.
