1927: Jimmy C. Newman was born in High Point, LA. He became the rare Cajun artist to achieve commercial success in country music, with more than 10 Top 10 hits from 1954-1966, eventually leading to his entry into the Grand Ole Opry.
1952: Songwriter Don Schlitz was born in Durham, NC. His hits include “The Gambler,” “Forever And Ever, Amen,” “On The Other Hand,” “Strong Enough To Bend,” “When You Say Nothing At All” and “I Feel Lucky,” among many others.
1956: Keyboard player Dan Truman was born in St. George, UT. He joined Diamond Rio in the 80s and has played the keys on hits like “Meet In The Middle,” “I Believe” and “One More Day.”
1967: Glen Campbell recorded “By The Time I Get To Phoenix” and “Hey Little One” at the Capitol Recording Studio in Hollywood.
1974: Loretta Lynn recorded “When The Tingle Becomes A Chill” during the evening at Bradley’s Barn in Mt. Juliet, TN.
1977: Three men attempted to steal Elvis Presley’s casket from the Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis to prove it was empty.
1978: Jacky Ward recorded “Rhythm Of The Rain” in Nashville.
1980: Epic released the George Jones album “I Am What I Am.”
1981: “(There’s) No Gettin’ Over Me” positions Ronnie Milsap at the top of the Billboard country singles chart.
1984: Keith Whitley signed a recording contract with RCA.
1987: Comedian Archie Campbell died in Knoxville following a heart attack. Following his 1958 membership in the Grand Ole Opry, he gained national fame as a cast member of “Hee Haw” with regular routines built around mangled, mispronounced words.
1989: MCA released Vince Gill’s first single for the label, “Never Alone,” co-written with Rosanne Cash.
1995: Warner Bros. released the Faith Hill album “It Matters To Me.”
1995: Curb released the Sawyer Brown album “This Thing Called Wantin’ And Havin’ It All.”
1998: Johnny Rodriguez shot and killed Israel Borrego, an acquaintance he says he thought was an intruder in his home in Sabinal, Texas. Rodriguez was charged with murder and freed on a $250,000 bond.
2010: Kenny Chesney’s high-school football documentary, “Boys Of Fall,” debuted on ESPN.
