1934: Vern Gosdin was born in Woodland, AL. Nicknamed “The Voice,” his quivering, emotional delivery made him one of country’s most respected traditional vocalists of the 1980s and ’90s behind such hits as “Set ‘Em Up Joe,” “Chiseled In Stone” and “Way Down Deep.”
1940: Songwriter Bobby Braddock was born in Auburndale, FL. The Country Music Hall of Fame member wrote such hits as George Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” Billy Currington’s “People Are Crazy” and Toby Keith’s “I Wanna Talk About Me.”
1943: Sammi Smith was born in Orange, CA. She received a Grammy award for her 1971 rendition of Kris Kristofferson’s “Help Me Make It Through The Night.”
1948: Roy Acuff received 81,000 of 100,000 votes in Tennessee’s Republican gubernatorial primary. The race pit him against his friend, Democratic candidate Gordon Browning.
1957: Patsy Cline’s self-titled debut album was released.
1957: Elvis Presley registerd a #1 country single in Billboard magazine with “(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear.”
1960: Drummer W.S. “Fluke” Holland joined Johnny Cash’s band for a show at the Three Rivers Club near Syracuse, NY. He became a permanent member, and the Tennessee Two became the Tennessee Three.
1961: Fiddler Mark O’Connor was born in Seattle, WA. He won the Country Music Association’s Musician of the Year award six times, appearing on more than 450 country recordings, and won a Grammy for “Restless.”
1968: Terri Clark was born in Montreal, Quebec. Raised in Calgary, she emerged in 1995 as a feisty, confident vocalist, netting successes such as “Better Things To Do,” “Poor Poor Pitiful Me,” “When Boy Meets Girl” and “Girls Lie Too.”
1968: Guitarist Luther Perkins died at Nashville’s Vanderbilt Medical Center of injuries sustained in a fire two days prior. As a member of Johnny Cash’s Tennessee Two, he played rhythm on numerous recordings and inspired “Luther Played The Boogie.”
1976: Kenny Rogers recorded “Lucille” in an afternoon at Nashville’s American Studio.
1980: Rosanne Cash recorded “Seven Year Ache” at Davlen Sound in North Hollywood, CA.
1982: Ernest Tubb added his voice to Hank Williams Jr.’s “Leave Them Boys Alone,” which also includes an appearance by Waylon Jennings, at Nashville’s Sound Stage. It was the final recorded performance of Tubb’s career.
1986: Songwriter Harlan Howard filed suit against Merle Haggard, claiming Hag borrowed parts of his 1960 song, “I Wish That I Could Fall In Love Today,” in writing “Let’s Chase Each Other Around The Room Tonight.”
1989: Dolly Parton scored a #1 country single in Billboard with “Why’d You Come In Here Lookin’ Like That.”
1995: Alan Jackson turned up at #1 on the Billboard country singles chart with “I Don’t Even Know Your Name.”
2008: Mercury released Jamey Johnson’s album “That Lonesome Song.”
2010: Charley Pride was part of an 18-person investor group headed by Nolan Ryan that buys the Texas Rangers baseball team for $593 million at auction in Fort Worth.
2019: Mayor David Briley declared Dolly Parton Day in the city of Nashville.
