1916: Carl Story was born in Lenoir, NC. Known as the Father of Bluegrass Gospel, he wrote “I Overlooked An Orchid,” a hit for Carl Smith and, later, Mickey Gilley.
1962: Jimmy Dean won Best Country & Western Recording for “Big Bad John” during the fourth annual Grammy Awards.
1973: MCA released the Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn recording “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man.”
1991: Wynonna Judd began recording her first solo album in Nashville.
2004: George Strait, Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett co-headline a date at Texas Stadium in Irving. The three joined voices on “Hey, Good Lookin’” and “Margaritaville” as the show becomes an album, “Live At Texas Stadium.”
2012: Guitarist Doc Watson died at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC, after abdominal surgery. He won seven Grammy awards during his career.
2017: Billy Ray Cyrus lent his voice to an animated lizard in the Nickelodeon series “Blaze And The Monster Machines.”
