1916: Carl Story was born in Lenoir, NC. Known as the Father of Bluegrass Gospel, he wrote “I Overlooked An Orchid,” a hit for Carl Smith and, later, Mickey Gilley.

1948: Merle Travis receives a guitar he had asked Paul Bigsby to custom-make on his behalf. Featuring Travis’ name in mother of pearl along the base of the pick guard, it becomes his trademark instrument, often referred to as “the Bigsby.”

1958: Ray Price recorded the Bill Anderson-penned “City Lights” in the evening at the Bradley Studios in Nashville.

1962: Jimmy Dean won Best Country & Western Recording for “Big Bad John” during the fourth annual Grammy Awards.

1973: MCA released the Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn recording “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man.”

1976: Johnny Cash rode to #1 on the Billboard country chart with “One Piece At A Time.”

1991: Wynonna Judd began recording her first solo album in Nashville.

1992: Billy Ray Cyrus scored his first #1 hit with “Achy Breaky Heart.”

1993: Wynonna got an early birthday present (her b-day is tomorrow) when her second solo album, “Tell Me Why,” debuted at #1 on the country charts.

2001: Arista released Brad Paisley’s “Part II” album.

2004: George Strait, Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett co-headline a date at Texas Stadium in Irving. The three joined voices on “Hey, Good Lookin’” and “Margaritaville” as the show becomes an album, “Live At Texas Stadium.”

2004: Gretchen Wilson’s debut single, “Redneck Woman,” took command of the top spot in “Billboard” for the first of five weeks.
